FeRFA AGM & BEST PRACTICE AWARDS 2018

BEST PRACTICE AWARDS SHORTLIST

FeRFA are pleased to announce the following shortlist for the 2018 Best Practice Awards.

SMALL INDUSTRIAL PROJECT OF THE YEAR (Sponsored by Boud Minerals)

CENTRAL FLOORING SERVICES & RESDEV

Project: Hilton Hotel, Leeds

A resin floor system was the ideal choice for the 6th floor kitchen area of the Hilton Hotel in Leeds.  Replacing the existing tiled floor with a new state of the art industrial resin floor provided a seamless hygienic solution for a busy catering kitchen where hygiene and drainage were at the forefront of the project.

Products: Resdev Pumadur HF

ACC FLOORING & RESDEV

Project: Mibelle AG – Main Manufacturing Unit, Bradford

A fit-for-purpose flooring design with an eye-catching appearance was a critical factor for this installation; the floor finish needed to leave a lasting impression on clients and visitors, but above all needed to be functional and safe for the workforce.

Products: Resdev Pumadur HF

IRL GROUP & REMMERS

Project: Swiftool Precision Engineering Limited, Sutton in Ashfield

This floor was transformed from a tired looking space to a newly refurbished workshop area and walkway colour matched by in-pail tainting. The project was completed within 72 hours causing minimum disruption, meaning the client was able to showcase their facilities to a potential high-profile customer.

Products: Remmers Epoxy Flex PH

LARGE INDUSTRIAL PROJECT OF THE YEAR (Sponsored by ACO Building Drainage)

CENTRAL FLOORING SERVICES & FLOWCRETE

Project: Lemonpath Warehouse Refurbishment

Environmental targets were met on this project when an old asphalt floor was removed using a £500,000 piece of equipment which enabled waste to be taken away directly for recycling, diverting approximately 100 tonnes of waste from landfill.

This project demonstrates the full force of industrial flooring using innovative techniques to remove existing flooring and the most cutting-edge technology and plant, reducing carbon footprint, man hours and manual labour.

Products: Flowcrete Pump Screed and Peran SL

INTEGRATED FLOORING TECHNOLOGIES & FLOWCRETE

Project: The Macallan Distillery, Scotland

Aesthetics were a critical aspect of this project, with over 21,000 square metres of flooring to be installed within a complex facility in a remote location. By using resin flooring this ensured that the floors in the industrial spaces would maintain a functional, visually attractive finish for a long period of time, with tourist areas having to withstand foot traffic of approximately 50 – 60,000 visitors per annum.

Products: Flowfresh, Peran SL, Flowcrete Quartz Structure

IRL GROUP & SIKA

Project: Willesden Depot, London

The three layer Sikafloor Pronto RB-25 was used in the refurbishment of platform areas at Willesden Rail Maintenance Depot in London. Bright colours were used to help highlight the platform edges and safe walking zones.

Products: Sikafloor Pronto RB-25

SMALL COMMERCIAL PROJECT OF THE YEAR (Sponsored by Innoveo)

ACC FLOORING & ALTRO

Project: Central Processing Unit, Sheffield Teaching Hospital

This refurbishment of a Central Processing Unit needed to deliver a flooring solution which not only enhanced the appearance of the floor surface, but also satisfied the requirements of durability, slip-resistance, hygiene and ease of cleaning.  These were all met by using the Altro Crete resin flooring system.

Products: Altro Crete 6 mm slip-resistant variant

ZIRCON FLOORING & SIKA

Project: Leeds Art University

High-skill levels were required on this TV studio project to ensure that a super-flat floor was achieved.  The performance of the specified products was crucial to create the ideal floor for the environment. It was required to be level, durable, smooth as well as aesthetically-pleasing and safe from damage caused by static electricity.

Products: Sikafloor 161, Level 30, 220W, Sika Earthing Kit & 262ASN

LARGE COMMERCIAL PROJECT OF THE YEAR (Sponsored by Stallard Kane Associates)

CENTRAL FLOORING SERVICES & RESDEV

Project: Triumph Motorcycles – New Tour Route

Triumph recently opened its doors to the public with their new tour route. The walking route for the tour had to flow correctly and stand out from the rest of the factory; this was achieved with the installation of Resdev’s polyurethane coatings, which were applied in 3 coats of bright yellow with a black line through the centre and an arrow to point in the right direction.  As the factory is ever changing, the product needed to be able to fit in with the fast paced changes of the factory layout; the time scale allowed was extremely tight with little room for error.

Products: Resdev Pumadur DD Silk

ZIRCON FLOORING & RESDEV

Project: BodyHoliday, Saint Lucia

Covering an area of over 250 m2 and subdivided into sections, bringing the kitchen areas up to standard was an integral part of a $20 million refurbishment at the BodyHoliday resort in St Lucia.  A clean, fresh and practical flooring system using resin flooring successfully transformed the food preparation area.  This was a demanding task with both temperature and humidity levels presenting challenges for the storage, installation and curing of products. The project also required meticulous planning to ensure that all materials were shipped from East Yorkshire to St Lucia.

Products: Resdev Pumaprime TC, Resdev Pumadur RT, Resdev Pumadur WR, Resdev Pumadur TF, Resdev Pumabulk, Resdev Pumexpand P

COATECH & FLOWCRETE

Project: Menai Science Park (M-Sparc), Gaerwen, Anglesey

The resin flooring on this project needed to reflect the high-tech, architecturally innovative principles that the new business centre was built around, and was met by using a combination of systems in a unique layout.  Matching products were used internally, externally, on pathways around the building and in the courtyard areas to give the impression of the surfaces flowing from inside the building through to the outside and vice-versa.

Products: Flowcrete Peran Comfort, Flowcrete Rustik Glamourstone

INNOVATION AWARD (Sponsored by Cobra Insurance Brokers)

ALTRO

QUICKCURE EXTRA

Altro Quickcure Extra is a rapid curing seal coat. It enables reduced downtime, resistance to water spotting and spillages and provides a hard-wearing finish.

FLOWCRETE

MONDÉCO RAPIDE

Mondéco Rapide is a robust, highly decorative resin terrazzo flooring system that can be rapidly applied. Based on innovative PUMMA technology, Mondéco Rapide reduces the overall installation time associated with epoxy or polyurethane resin terrazzo flooring systems by up to 75%.

SIKA & ACO BUILDING DRAINAGE

FLOORING DRAINAGE CONNECTION

An innovative testing rig developed to determine the appropriate flooring drainage system for a specific industrial environment, helping to uphold safety and functionality in hygiene-critical environments.

TRAINING

FeRFA SAY FAREWELL TO TERRY AFTER 12 YEARS

FeRFA say farewell to Terry Foxley after 12 years as Apprentice Training Officer.

After his retirement from Altro Resins in 2006, Terry was approached by Helen McGachie to develop a new apprentice training programme for in-situ resin flooring.  Terry spent the early part of 2007 developing the standards for training, assessment and final qualification in conjunction with Helen and the CITB.  The first module took place in the June of 2007 and since that time, Terry has seen 19 groups totalling 113 apprentices through to completion.  In-between times, Terry has carried out numerous up-skilling training sessions in sales & marketing, specialist static-dissipitive systems and decorative quartz finishes.  Apprenticeship schemes for cementitious screeding and sub-floor preparation have also been introduced.

“In my 12 year role as Apprentice Training Officer I have been privileged to work with some of the best people in the industry.  This, together with the great support provided to us by the many manufacturers, has allowed us to establish a highly respected and credible apprenticeship programme.  I could not have achieved my goal of improving the knowledge and standards of the resin flooring industry without the support of Helen and the willingness of all the apprentices that I have brought through the scheme.  I wish the industry all the success for the future under the new leadership and the new training officer.”

FeRFA WELCOME NEW TRAINER JACK LONGDEN

FeRFA welcome our new Training Officer, Jack Longden.

Jack has worked in the flooring industry for 45 years as a skilled applicator.  He has worked with many manufacturers supplying training and support to flooring contractors worldwide and his role in recent years has focussed on site support.   “The course of my career has given me knowledge of all facets of the industry from sand & cement screeds to industrial and highly decorative resin systems.   I am delighted to have the opportunity to pass these skills on to the apprentices and to experienced individuals through the FeRFA upskilling courses”.

Jack is currently running 3 In-situ Flooring: Resin apprenticeship groups totalling 16 apprentices.

FeRFA are offering a new Screed apprenticeship scheme in January 2019 and new Resin and Surface Preparation schemes in March.  Grant funding is limited so please register your potential candidates as soon as possible to take advantage of the FeRFA member discount and grant funding opportunities for CITB registered employers.
