IFT Install resin and raised access flooring at new state-of-the-art Aerospace Innovation Centre

IFT was appointed by Balfour Beatty to install the resin and raised access flooring at the new state-of-the-art Aerospace Innovation Centre in Prestwick for Spirit AeroSystems who design and build aerostructures for both commercial and defence customers around the world.

IFT’s fully integrated flooring service was key to this project in delivering on a package which combined floor surface preparation, a variety of resin floor finishes, and Raised Access Flooring.

The resin finishes included Flowfast Terrosso to the toilet areas, Flowshield SL to the main production areas and epoxy floor paint to the plant rooms. The raised access flooring was installed to the office areas prior to the application of the floor tiles – the photos below are testament to the finishes provided throughout.

Flowshield SL is a hygienic self-smoothing resin floor finish, suitable for dry process areas where the floor is subjected to medium to heavy duty, foot, trolley, pallet truck and rubber wheeled fork lift traffic. Flowshield SL is used to protect concrete given its improved durability to withstand both mechanical and chemical stress. The finished surface becomes smooth, impermeable, and easy to clean.

Flowfast Terrosso is a seamless, decorative, hard wearing acrylic resin floor finish, developed for high traffic retail environments requiring a new floor finish under a fast turnaround.

Flowseal EPW is a coloured, gloss finish, water based hygienic floor seal for use in food process areas, kitchens, light industrial areas, storerooms, garages and areas of pedestrian and light traffic. This system exhibits a low odour during application and its easy application provides a seamless finish that is easy to clean and maintain.

BGM600 Raised Access Flooring is particularly suitable for general office environments where there are significant levels of building services in the floor void including electrical power, data, telecoms, air conditioning or environmental control, security, fire detection and suppression.

Thompson Airways gets new hangar floor at Luton Airport

IRL Group has completed a large project to upgrade the flooring for Thompson Airway’s hangar 61 at Luton Airport.

The project included repairs to concrete and the resinstatement of expansion joints throughout the busy hangar plus additional works which were completed concurrently. Over 950m2 were laid with resin type 3 epoxy flooring from Sika, who offer specialist products for airport solutions. Prior to and during the works, a number of changes were made to the specification all of which could be catered for by IRL’s well-trained and experienced team. By careful planning and phasing of the works, Thomson Airways was able to carry on with its usual activities and maintain aircraft throughout the project with minimal disruption.

Mapei Flooring System at Gatwick’s North Terminal

Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal Departure has recently been completely refurbished using products from Mapei UK to deliver a robust flooring system that tolerates the demands of a busy airport terminal.

As the UK’s second largest airport and the most efficient single-runway airport in the world, Gatwick Airport required a screed that could endure the high volume of footfall which it encounters daily. Mapei specified a screed containing their Topcem binder, also including Mapefibre NS12 polypropylene fibres, to replace up to 9,000m2 of the previous flooring in the North Terminal Departures. Topcem, which carries an EC1 rating, produces a perfect screed to use prior to the installation of any flooring where rapid drying is required – allowing light foot traffic after just 12 hours, ensuring the airport experienced minimal disruption. Mapefibre NS12 helps to create a strong matrix within the screed which is more resistant to the stresses induced by the setting and hardening process. Once laid, the floor was left for 28 days before it was drop-hammer tested, where it received a Category A rating. With Gatwick’s moving annual total passenger numbers recently reaching over 41 million, the airport required an abrasion resistant flooring for some 400m2 of the baggage area floors. Mapei’s Ultratop Industrial was specified because of its excellent abrasion and wearing resistance to the high volume of traffic in the area. To prevent staining the Ultratop Industrial was sealed with one of the products from the Mapefloor range.

State of the art aerospace project wins award

A brand-new state of the art building has been constructed by bringing together two existing aging facilities at CDS Solihull to achieve an award winning project.

This advanced aerospace manufacturing, research and development facility produces engine control systems for a range of applications, including the Rolls-Royce Trent family of aircraft engines. The flooring needed to fulfil the clients high standards and requirements for chemical resistance and a slip resistant finish. IRL Group carried out the complex project in which a total 9,500m2 of resin flooring, which consisted of: Chemical Resistant Flooring with Chemical Resistant Wall Render, Epoxy Conductive Flooring System with an Anti-Slip Textured Finish and finally, Remmers Self Smoothing Epoxy Resin with a Slip Resistant Seal Coat. To complement the floors, 3500m (2.1 miles) of Remmers Epoxy Cove Skirting were also installed. This project was chosen as the winner of the 2016/17 FeRFA Large Industrial Project of the Year Award.
