A Quality Floor for the Kennel Club Educational Trust

Project details

The Kennel Club Building at Stonleigh Park opened in September 2008 and is considered Britain’s best venue created to suit all canine educational needs from dog shows and training sessions to seminars and meetings. A completely dog friendly venue run by the Kennel Club Educational Trust (Registered Charity Number 1121454). Among the excellent facilities offered are two exhibition halls that can accommodate up to 650 dogs in each hall.

The site floor has originally been unsealed green asphalt, but it was stained and was proving very difficult to keep clean, even using strong, industrial cleaning products. It pitted easily and had become uneven, which was a big problem as the venue is available for hire and needed to look good. A tiled floor had been considered, but this idea was dismissed for fear of the tiles lifting and causing further problems. The decision was made to use a resurfacer designed for asphalt and they found Watco through a search on the internet.

The solution

Watco sent someone to the site to discuss their requirements and Watco Asphalt & Concrete resurfacer was suggested as the most suitable product in our range. It provides an attractive, sealed and flexible surface that can be applied at 2mm thick; this would take out the imperfections in the current surface and create a smooth and level floor. Also, being strong and durable, the new surface would last for years.

Watco offered them a sample tin of the product to test, free of charge. It was laid and then tested for 6 weeks, after which the client agreed that it was the ideal product and that they were happy to go ahead with the full order.

The area to be treated was versatile in that it could be separated by roll-down shutters down its length. The individual areas measured 1222m² and 1135m² respectively. For application, the larger area was split again into 3 x 8m wide bays and these bays were masked off, giving a clean edge to work to. A wet edge is easier to work to, but that was not possible with a work area of this size and having a straight line to work to made it easier.

The work was completed in four days, with two men mixing and pouring and three men trowelling the product to give it a smooth finish. It is possible to apply this product by levelling it with a roller and then dragging a soft broom through it to give it a textured, brushed finish. This method is much quicker, but would not have given the Kennel Club the smooth finish they required.

“The finished floor is sealed, smooth, durable and looks good, the Kennel Club are delighted with it.”

Ucrete Chemical Resistant Bund Lining

Chemically Resistant Ucrete UD200 floor topping and Ucrete RG vertical render.

Chemically Resistant Ucrete UD200 floor topping & Ucrete RG vertical render.

Lasercroft applied a 6mm Ucrete floor with Ucrete WR applied to vertical surfaces at a nominal 4mm thick to protect the concrete structure of this newly constructed bunded area from chemical attack.

The concrete required protection from the nitric acid which is used in the processing of galvanised fencing panels on the site. Nitric acid is one of many chemicals to which Ucrete is resistant.

Heavy Duty Chemical Resistant Flooring for Tanker Loading Bay

Preparation and making good of existing tanker loading bay, followed by application of Pumadur HF heavy-duty polyurethane resin floor topping.

The existing protective coatings of this tanker loading bay had all but worn away, offering little to no protection to the concrete base. Any spillages were now resulting in corrosion of the concrete, with chemicals gathering in the potholes, further accelerating the corrosion.

The area was prepared using tungsten carbide tipped scabbling equipment, to remove the remnants of existing coatings and any weak friable concrete.

Once the area had been thoroughly vacuumed to remove dust and debris, any deep surface defects were made good using Laserbulk polyurethane bulking mortar. The area was then ready to apply a heavy-duty, chemical-resistant topping. Pumadur HF was chosen for its combination of wear, impact & chemical resistance.

Acid Resistant Flooring for Acid Filling Deck

Removal of failing, corroded finishes and application of chemical-resistant Pumadur polyurethane floor and wall finishes to this acid filling area.

We managed to find a window in the Scottish weather to complete the refurb of this acid-filling deck.

The deck is used to fill IBC’s with corrosive chemicals such as sulphuric and hydrochloric acid at high concentrations. Spillages are washed into the gully at the back of the bay, but the falls were insufficient to move the chemicals to the sump.

Where the existing coatings had failed the concrete was under severe attack and was getting worse by the day.

All failing coatings were removed, damaged concrete chopped out & repaired & increased falls were installed in the gully to prevent standing product.

We then applied Pumadur HF to the bottom of the gully and the floor area of the deck before finally lining the vertical surfaces with a chemical-resistant polyurethane render.

Pumadur chemical resistant bund lining

KDS Construction

Resdev’s Pumadur HF, DP10 & WR were applied to this bunded area forming the washer foundation of a large aluminium packaging manufacturer. These heavy-duty polyurethane systems were specified in their respective areas based on slip resistance and chemical resistance.

Lasercroft recently completed over 1,200m2 of Resdev’s polyurethane resin floor finishes at one of the largest manufacturers of innovative, sustainable aluminium packaging solutions for beverage, personal care and household products.

Works were primarily carried out to the newly formed chemical bunded areas. Lasercroft first applied polymer-modified screeds to falls to allow any overflow of liquid to be distributed to the sump areas required.

Products from Resdev’s range of industrial polyurethane resin finishes were used – Pumadur DP10 and Pumadur HF were laid at 6mm thick to create safe, chemical resistant & hard-wearing floor surfaces. Pumadur WR was then applied to the bund walls to create a fully resin-sealed unit.

New Automotive Workshop in Coventry

Project Type:
Industrial

Installation Type:
Epoxy Coatings

Finish Type:
FeRFA Type 3

ACC Flooring was asked by a new client to install a high build epoxy coating to their new automotive workshop in Coventry. The 1,215m² floor area was shotblast & diamond edge ground to remove any laitance from the concrete substrate.

The expansion joints were all diamond saw cut & the failed compound raked out prior to the installation of ACC Maintain, a low odour polyurethane concrete which provides excellent durability & impact resistance. Small substrate repairs were also carried out & again ACC Maintain was used to facilitate these repairs.

2 coats ACC HB SF high build epoxy coating in Light Grey was installed to the main floor area. 2 coats of ACC HB SF was applied to the designated bays & once cured demarcation using Altro Resin’s Altro Line high visibility, high gloss, high build epoxy line marking system in RAL 2003 Orange was installed to mark out each bay.

2 coats of Altro Line in RAL 2003 Orange were applied to the EV Bay with ACC HB SF in Dark Grey used to create the demarcation lines around the bay.

ACC HB SF is ideal for workshop, warehouse, storage & general industry locations & with the correct maintenance programme will have a life expectancy of a minimum 7 years.

Altro Line is the perfect solution for identifying isolated areas & spaces & defining pedestrian walkways & zebra crossings.

The project was completed on time despite a tight working window to the delight of the client.

Contract Sterilisation Company, Bradford

ACC Flooring was awarded the contract to refurbish a warehouse facility for a leading provider of infection prevention and other procedural products and services who has over 50 worldwide locations. The company offers contract sterilisation, laboratory testing and products and packaging services to medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers.

The 1,700m² area had existing walkways, demarcation and pallet markings but the floor coating was badly worn and damaged in some areas and required a full refurbishment.

It was agreed with the client that to minimise any disruption to the business the installation would be carried out over three visits in a five week period in February and March 2020.

The substrate to the first and second visit was shotblasted due to the openness of the areas enabling full access for the shotblasting machinery. The third visit had to be prepared by hand held diamond grinders due to working close to equipment and the access to the narrow storage aisles. All the existing floor coating and other laitance was removed to provide a clean substrate.

Any damaged areas were made good with ACC Maintain Floor Repair which is a low odour polyurethane concrete applied at a thickness of 5 – 10mm offering durability, impact and abrasion resistance to concrete and polymer modified cementitious screeds.

An epoxy scratchcoat was installed at a nominal thickness of 1mm to over 800m² to the areas in the poorest condition.

The failed jointing compound had been raked out and the expansion joints were diamond saw cut before infilling with ACC Maintain Joint Repair which is a low odour polyurethane concrete specially formulated to repair joint arises in concrete floor slabs.

2 coats of Altro Tect slip resistant, solvent free, high build epoxy coating in Dawn Grey was applied to the Warehouse flooring with Sark Blue to the pedestrian walkways. Altro Tect is available in 27 standard colours and can be used in light to medium duty industrial applications and offers excellent chemical and abrasion resistance in a high gloss finish with ease of cleaning providing a fully sealed surface.

The walkways were edged with Altro Line solvent free, high build, high visibility line marking system in Safety Yellow which was also utilised to create pallet bays and safety hatchings to doorways and loading bays.

Black and Safety Yellow pedestrian zebra crossings were introduced in Altro Line to enhance the health and safety of both employees and visitors.

Altro Line is ideal for defining walkways and isolated areas and is available in 4 standard colours including Safety Yellow, Safety Red, Black and White and is highly visible due to its high gloss finish.

With a minimum 7 year life expectancy and offering a dust free environment in a key location, Altro Tect and Altro Line are the ideal solution for both refurbishment and new build projects in production areas, general industry, warehousing and storage.

The client was delighted with the transformation and the project was completed with the minimal downtime to the business.

Treatment Plant, Clitheroe

A major UK provider of environmental services asked ACC Flooring Ltd to deliver a solution for their internal sump and drainage channel and an external tank area. The sump and channel were both in a very poor condition caused by the aggressive chemicals which over time has eaten away at the linings.

Both areas were mechanically prepared to remove any laitance. A polymer modified screed was then installed to line the sump base and walls and laid to falls to the channel so that any liquid ran into the sump. The channel was then protected with marine ply to allow the polymer modified screed to cure. The advantages of a polymer modified screed over a traditional sand and cement screed include minimising shrinkage and cracking, improved flexural strength and reduced permeability.

A heavy duty polyurethane screed @ 6mm was applied to the sump walls and base and the channel sides and base. A heavy duty polyurethane screed benefits from providing a seamless finish which is non-tainting with durability, impact and very high chemical resistance properties. The product is resistant to a wide range of commonly used chemicals such as concentrated citric acids, 50% acetic acid, lactic acid and common alcohols, in addition to wide range of inorganic acids, fuels, hydraulic oils, mineral oils and solvents.

A finishing coat of a solvent based UV stable polyurethane coating was applied throughout the installation to give additional protection and enhanced chemical resistance. The product can be applied by brush, short nap roller or spray and is available in a gloss, silk or matt finish.

After further preparation, a seamless polyurethane mortar for vertical surfaces and radius cove was applied to both the tank face and the perimeter walls. This product benefits from providing a wide chemical resistance, when sealed and high abrasion resistance in addition to being easy to maintain. A water based polyurethane grout was the used as a seal to complete the installation.

Four concrete plinths were prepared and dressed with a two coats of a high build epoxy coating whilst the small sump was dressed with a heavy duty polyurethane screed.

The work was carried out over a ten day period during the plant shutdown. The client was delighted with the outcome with the installation being completed to the agreed timescale enabling the plant to be re- commissioned on the agreed date.
